I always used to struggle with this scripture because Jesus taught us to love everyone. Then I realized it was not saying to not love others, this scripture tells us to love God first and to love God more.
“If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.” - Matthew 10:37-39 NLT
I recently saw a quote from American Theologian Tim Keller which has me thinking......
"If you love anything in this world more than God, you will crush that object under the weight of your expectations."
If our love for God is not first in our lives, not only do we distance ourselves God but we actually crush our well intended love for others as well as the personal life goals and achievements we are seeking on our journey. When we crush, we absolutely accomplish the results we desire the least. If this practice is true, watch your life change from crushing to building. "
"Love God, Love People and Make Disciples for Jesus Christ."
Peace,
